Annotation

Description
Methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase transfers formyl group from 10-formyltetrahydrofolate to the aminoacyl moiety of methionyl-tRNA(fMet) which results in two products, tetrahydrofolate and N-formylmethionyl-tRNAfMet. The formylation is the key step in the channeling of the initiator tRNA towards the ribosomal P-site and initiation of translation in eubacteria. The inactivation of the formylase gene on the Escherichia coli chromosome severely impairs cell growth.
